What is the Process for Getting Porcelain Veneers?
The process for porcelain veneers requires several steps:
1. Consultation
Your dentist first checks to make sure you have healthy teeth and gums. This will be done with an exam and X-rays. You and your dentist will also discuss what issues you want your veneers to correct.
2. Trimming
Because porcelain veneers attach to the front of your teeth, your dentist has to trim the surface of your teeth. Only half a millimeter of enamel needs to be removed, but you and dentist can discuss if an anesthetic or sleep dentistry is right for you.
During the same visit as the trim, your dentist will take an impression or mold of your teeth. You will bite down on a metal tray with a putty-like substance to form an impression. This mold is used by a dental laboratory to ensure that the porcelain veneers properly fit and cover your teeth. Your dentist’s office receives your veneers after approximately 1 to 2 weeks.
4. Bonding
Once your dentist receives your porcelain veneers, she will test the fit, color and shape of each veneer. She makes minor adjustments, if necessary, and is then ready to bond them to your teeth. Anesthesia is not typically needed, but you can discuss sleep dentistry options with your dentist.
To prepare for bonding, your teeth are cleaned, polished and etched. Next, your dentist covers your teeth with a special cement to hold the veneers in place. A light dries the cement, and your dentist makes the final small adjustments to trim excess cement, check your bite alignment etc.
You are then ready to leave with your new smile. A follow-up visit is scheduled a week of two after the application of the veneers to check the fit and alignment of your veneers.
