Six Habits that Ruin Your Teeth

The modern lifestyle is terrible for our teeth, and many of us don’t even realize that we are agents in our own downfall. All of the habits that follow are not good news for teeth, so cutting back on these habits will help your teeth to stay healthier.

High sugar Diet

Any diet which is high in sugar will put your teeth at risk, because sugar decays your teeth and can cause tooth infection. Fizzy drinks and sweets are very bad for teeth, but other items like children’s cough medicine can also be bad for you. Fruit sugars, including sugars in natural fruit juices can also cause decline in your oral health.

Chewing on non-food items

Many people will absent-mindedly chew on a pen or pencil while they are thinking about something, but this puts your teeth in danger. Chewing on non-food items can gradually wear your teeth down and will lead to cracks and breaks. Even chewing on ice cubes can be bad.

Opening things with your teeth

This follows on from chewing on things. Your teeth are not strong enough to be used on plastics or metals. In addition to this, opening things with your teeth can put pressure and directional force on your teeth in ways that chewing food just wouldn’t.

Drinking Coffee

Regularly drinking coffee will stain your teeth, and it can be very difficult to get rid of these stains without using professional whitening treatments. In addition to the stains, coffee is acidic, which can eat away at your tooth enamel.

Smoking

Smoking regularly will stain your teeth in the same way that drinking coffee does, however there is a far greater concern from smoking. Smoking can exacerbate gum disease, which will eventually lead to your teeth falling out. It also puts you at increased risk from mouth, lip and tongue cancer.

Not brushing and flossing

Many people skip flossing (and even brushing) because they feel that they are too busy. However, if you need to have extensive dental procedures done in later life, this will take much more time out of your schedule.
